As my niece, Sarah, and I walked along Michigan Avenue in Chicago, we passed by colorful statues of German Shepherd Dogs. The dog statues were part of the Chicago “K9s for Cops” campaign. Local artists designed the 54 inch tall fiberglass statues, while local companies or individuals sponsored them. Over 100 dog statues were on display in Chicago, and most of them were standing guard along Michigan Avenue.
The “K9 for Cops” campaign raised money for PAWS Chicago, a dog rescue organization, and to pay tribute to the Chicago Police Canine Unit. Approximately, 70 highly skilled dogs are trained to serve with the Chicago Police Department in a variety of capacities. In addition, proceeds will be used to honor fallen Chicago police officers and provide financial assistance to their families. The statues were auctioned off on eBay with the goal of raising $250,000.
I snapped photos of several of the brightly colored statues.
